Abstract

The behavior of strain-softening geosynthetic interfaces that can lead to progressive failures in lined containment facilities has been a source of confusion in slope stability evaluations for over 30 years. The paper presents fifteen mechanisms that can potentially induce displacements along strain-softening interfaces, along with measures that can be considered to reduce strain-softening displacement. New quantifications of shear strength variability that can be caused by manufacturing, installation, and construction practices are introduced.
