Abstract
Purpose
This scoping review summarizes the literature on neonatal physiotherapy among neonates admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), identifies gaps in the literature, and provides future recommendations for better research.
Materials and methods
Between January 2010 and December 2023, articles were reviewed from the following databases: PubMed, Google Scholar, EMBASE, and PEDro. The collected data encompassed details such as author(s), publication date, country of origin, study purpose, study design, populations included, study setting, intervention(s), outcome(s) evaluated, and key findings.
Results
Of the 97 full-text articles, 9 articles met the inclusion criteria. Overall, the most common interventions were music therapy, infant massage, Tactile Kinaesthetic Stimulation (TKS), hydrotherapy, and Kangaroo mother care (KMC).
Conclusions
It is recommended that an evaluation of enduring functional consequences and the quality of life be conducted in future research. Identification of conditions immediately after birth should also be conducted for better lifetime outcomes.
