Abstract

A shift from a focus on the learner as an autonomous agent to one that places greater emphasis on the learner’s relationship with their learning environment is a hallmark of learner autonomy. Learning settings are complex, with many aspects influencing outcomes; metaphors like ecology shed light on this. Ecological perspectives highlight the importance of students negotiating their environment through purposeful behaviours within interrelated contexts.
