Assessment of the Impact of Unauthorized Landfills of Solid Municipal Waste Located in the Arctic Zone of the Russian Federation on the Components of the Natural Environment

Abstract

The natural, climatic and socio-economic conditions of the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation (AZRF) are considered. Factors of anthropogenic negative impact on the components of the natural environment are noted. It has been established that unauthorized municipal solid waste (MSW) dumps located in the Russian Arctic have a significant impact on the ecosystem. Contamination of soil, surface and groundwater near MSW dumps with substances of hazard classes I–IV has been recorded. It was revealed that the maximum content of pollutants in the components of the natural environment exceeds the established MPC/APC standards by 17 times.
