Abstract

A mammutid is described here for the first time from the Late Miocene (MN12 equivalent) deposits of Abkhareh village, Varzeghan region, in the North-Western part of Iran. It is identified as “Mammut” cf. obliquelophus and is represented by an isolated and moderately worn upper third molar with a zygodont crown pattern typical of mammutids. In addition, two upper incisors found associated with the molar and probably belonging to the same individual are assigned as Mammut. The studied material expands the geographic distribution of “Mammut” obliquelophus into Western Asia. There are some known localities bearing vertebrate fossil beds from Northwest of Iran like Maragheh (MN12, Mirzaie Ataabadi et al., 2013c), Ivand (MN12, Mirzaie Ataabadi et al, 2011a) and Kivi-1 (MN12, Jafarzadeh and Konidaris, 2020). However, some materials belonging to proboscideans were revealed from a village, Abkhareh (MN12), in Varzeghan area 150 km away from Maragheh. In this study, an upper third molar and a pair of upper tusks of an ancient elephant-like mammal were attributed to the mammutid “Mammut” cf. obliquelophus. This finding proves that this taxon inhabited Iran between 8–7.5 Ma, which falls in the Turolian stage of the Late Miocene. It marks the first record of this species in Iran and expands the known geographic distribution of “Mammut” obliquelophus into Western Asia.
伊朗西北部有一些已知的脊椎动物化石产地,如 Maragheh(MN12,Mirzaie Ataabadi 等人,2013c)、Ivand(MN12,Mirzaie Ataabadi 等人,2011a)和 Kivi-1(MN12,Jafarzadeh 和 Konidaris,2020)。

The Swiss Journal of Palaeontology publishes original research and review articles of interest to the international community in the fields of palaeontology, taxonomy and systematics, while recognising at the same time the importance of documenting high-quality palaeontological data in a regional context. Palaeobiology in combination with alpha taxonomy is a core topic of the journal. Submitted papers should have an appeal as wide as possible, directed towards an international readership. Contributions should not have been simultaneously submitted elsewhere, and the overlap of content between related articles should be minimal. Duplications of text and the use of previously published illustrations without adequate citation are unacceptable. If a manuscript has two or more authors, both or all have to sign to confirm they all were involved in the work and have agreed to its submission. The preferred manuscript language is UK English, but consistently used US English is also acceptable. We encourage the publication of proceedings of international meetings as well as special thematic issues. Short contributions and book reviews are also accepted. An international editorial team as well as guest editors guarantee that the thematic issues as well as all articles in regular issues are peer-reviewed and meet the highest standards.
