Abstract
Concept analyses are an essential practice in building the body of nursing science. A discussion regarding nursing as a discipline, profession, or vocation is provided. The contributions of concept analyses to nursing science and various methods of performing concept analyses are presented. The Walker and Avant's and Rodgers and Knafl's methods of concept analysis are discussed. A brief concept analysis of “spirituality” using the Walker and Avant's method is provided to guide the reader through the basic steps. Performing concept analyses using established, well-respected methods such as those presented in this article lends credibility to the end-product. Concept analyses should not be disregarded but instead should be undertaken with great care, using established methods of concept analysis and be purposeful in their design in order to make meaningful contributions to the nursing literature.
