Abstract
— Young coconut shells are often ignored by the community, which results in the accumulation of waste in several locations. In fact, the characteristics of young coconut shells are soft and have unique fiber patterns and motifs, which have the potential to be used as material for design development in processed coconut shell products that are already circulating on the market. The aim of this research is to determine an effective processing method for young coconut shells using the press technique. Apart from that, this research aims to create design innovations that are different from previously existing processed coconut shell products. Data collection was carried out by conducting interviews with several users and experts, accompanied by direct observation of the availability of waste in the field and existing processed products to identify the characteristics and appropriate treatment in processing this waste. The experiments carried out discovered new processing techniques in processing materials for making hood products. The softening technique used also has the potential to produce designs for processed coconut shell products that are unique compared to existing products. Meanwhile, the typical patterns and motifs of young coconut shells can be maintained, resulting in a product that displays the natural impression of the material.
