Bee Sting Ocular Trauma: A Novel Presentation and Literature Review

Abstract

The objective of this study was to report on the evolution of a bee sting injury and retained stinger apparatus in the cornea that had good anatomical and functional results with appropriate management. Case report and literature review are presented. A 77-year-old patient presented after being stung by a bee in the right eye for 2 hours. His AVMC was 20/30. Slit-lamp examination showed conjunctival hyperemia, stromal infiltration of the corneal limbus into the X-meridian; + + cells (16-25 cells) were evident in the anterior chamber, also confirmed the presence of a retained corneal stinger apparatus. The OCT-AS confirmed that the stinger penetrates into the anterior chamber (AC) without contacting lens or iris. Visual acuity was 20/20. The review conducted showed that eye bee sting can cause several serious complications that were detailed in this report.
