Abstract

We report the case of a 13-year-old girl who suffered of complicated appendicitis, treated by laparoscopic appendectomy, who then develops a bilateral pleural effusion, requiring a chest drain. Pleural exudative effusion is a rare complication of perforated appendicitis; it’s caused by irritation of the diaphragm and by the passage of liquids from the abdominal cavity to the thoracic one, favored by pneumoperitoneum and Trendelenburg position.
