Abstract

The amplitude of the received signals during the ultrasonic testing of the railroad wheelset axles using the mirror-shadow method is significantly influenced by the quality of contact of the piezoelectric transducer with the cylindrical surface of the test object compared with the testing of objects with flat surfaces. The key reasons influencing the results of testing are the condition of the input surface, its curvature, as well as the application force of the piezoelectric transducer. When using electromagneticacoustic transducers, the requirements for surface quality are much lower, and this reduces the probability of errors associated with the contact quality on a cylindrical surface during acceptance ultrasonic testing by the mirror-shadow method of the railroad wheelset axles after manufacture and repair.

Russian Journal of Nondestructive Testing, a translation of Defectoskopiya, is a publication of the Russian Academy of Sciences. This publication offers current Russian research on the theory and technology of nondestructive testing of materials and components. It describes laboratory and industrial investigations of devices and instrumentation and provides reviews of new equipment developed for series manufacture. Articles cover all physical methods of nondestructive testing, including magnetic and electrical; ultrasonic; X-ray and Y-ray; capillary; liquid (color luminescence), and radio (for materials of low conductivity).
