Abstract
Introduction
Infants born very preterm (VPI) at <32 weeks of birth gestational age (BGA) are susceptible to low-grade ventricular haemorrhages. Adverse long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes (ALTNO) for lower-grade haemorrhages (LGH) need to be explored to provide consistent, evidence-based information when counseling parents regarding their child's future development.
Objective
To explore adverse long-term neurological outcomes for extremely preterm infants with low-grade intraventricular haemorrhages.
Methods
A literature search was undertaken in PubMed, Medline, Cochrane, CINAHL, and BNI databases.
Results
Six research papers were critically reviewed and synthesised for findings.
Conclusion
The evidence for preterm infants developing ALTNO in association with a neonatal diagnosis of LGH is inconclusive and therefore caution should be used when counseling parents on the functional development of their child.
