Abstract

Introduction

Considering the role of oxygen in wound care, it can be used in the management of diaper dermatitis, defined as an 'inflammatory reaction.' This study aims to investigate the effect of oxygen therapy on diaper dermatitis in infants.

Method

This study was designed as a randomized controlled trial. Infants were randomly divided into two groups: routine care group (n = 30) and oxygen therapy group (n = 30). While routine care was applied to all newborns, oxygen therapy was applied to newborns in the oxygen therapy group in addition to routine care.

Results

Oxygen therapy significantly reduced the severity of diaper dermatitis at the 24th, 48th, and 72 nd h (p < 0.05). Compared with the routine care group, the recovery rate was statistically higher in the oxygen therapy group at the 24th hour (OR 6.46 95% [2.30–18.19]), 48th (OR 5.12 95% [2.16–12.18), and 72 nd h (OR 7.98 95% [1.75–8.93]).

Discussion

Administering oxygen to the diaper dermatitis area reduces the severity and shortens the recovery time of diaper dermatitis.
