Abstract
Toxic and biological effects of dental materials are of great importance in clinical use in dentistry. When dental materials are newly developed, their effects on living tissues are first evaluated through in vitro tests followed by in vivo animal experiments and clinical trials. With in vitro cell culture tests, the responses of tissues at the cellular level can be examined and physiological activities can be imitated. Additionally, cell culture tests are less costly than animal experiments. It takes less time, is easily applicable and repeatable. However, with developing and changing technology, real-time cell analysis systems (xCELLigence® system), which are an alternative to traditional testing methods, can be preferred in biocompatibility evaluations of dental materials. With this system, it is possible to observe and analyze cells simultaneously in their real environment, without the need to stain or mark the cells. This review aims to highlight the superior features of the xCELLigence® system, which eliminates the disadvantages of traditional in vitro biocompatibility evaluation methods.
