Abstract
In this study, dental examination results of 5-8-year-old children and their mothers who have been living in Muğla province and have applied to the Faculty of Dentistry at Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University were evaluated, taking into account the data of decayed (d/D), missing (m/M), filled (f/F) teeth, their place of residence, the mother's education level, and employment status. The study group was formed from mothers and children who volunteered to participate after the purpose and content of the study were explained. To determine the caries profile of primary dentition, dmft was used, and for permanent dentition, DMFT was used. In order to determine the living conditions of the family to which the mother and child belonged, as well as the mother's education level and employment status, they were asked to answer prepared questions. The results, consisting of the formed index after intraoral examination and answers to questions, were statistically evaluated using IBM SPSS v23.0 (IBM Corp. 2015, Armonk, NY, US). According to the results obtained, dmft index values showed no statistically significant difference between girls and boys, and it was determined that there was no difference in terms of the children's place of residence. Furthermore, no statistically significant relationship was found between the children's DMFT index values and their place of residence and the mother's employment status. However, it was observed that the mother's education level had a significant effect on the children's dmft and DMFT index values. A statistically significant positive correlation was found between the mother's DMFT index value and the child's dmft index value. Additionally, it was statistically determined that the dmft index values of children with employed mothers significantly lower than those of children whose mothers unemployed. The study showed that the mother's level of being affected by decay, education level, and employment status were effective on the level of children being affected by tooth decay. Attempts to develop knowledge and attitudes towards oral and dental health in parents, especially in mothers, will have a significant impact on improving the oral health of the next generation.
