Muravyov’s Powerlessness: “Princes” Oginsky and the Uprising of 1863 in Lithuania

Abstract

In this article the author for the fi rst time in historiography specifi cally examines the role of the princes Oginsky family in the uprising of 1863. On the basis of the evidence that previously escaped the attention of the researchers, the author demonstrates the active involvement of the Oginsky family in the uprising, their role in fi nancing the uprising preparation, their part in clandestine activities and their relations with K. Kalinovsky. The author of the article also reveals the reasons for the Ogibsky evading penalty and for the lack of research of their role in the events.
