However, with the advent in the last decade of transgenic technology, it is now possible to introduce one or more viral genes into the germ-line of animals. Thus, transgenic technology allows for the study of viral gene expression and function in the context of the whole animal. The focus of this review is to define the advantages and disadvantages of the transgenic approach in studies of viral pathogenesis. Abstract
