Calmodulin regulates the pumping ATPase by direct interaction and also by activating a protein kinase. The Na+/Ca2+ exchanger is modulated by calmodulin via a phosphorylation-dephosphorylation cycle. Both the kinase and the phosphatase are membrane-bound and calmodulin-sensitive.
