Abstract
The 3-stage pathological process which is induced by the inoculation of a germ into a joint includes: the liquid stage characterized by a modification of the articular fluid, the synovial stage characterized by an inflammatory reaction of the synovial membrane, and the osteoartropathic stage characterized by a bone lesion at the level of capsule-synovial insertions. Specific treatment is needed for each of these three stages. Arthroscopy is the preferential investigation for both liquid and synovial stages; bone and articular resection is needed in case of osteoarthritis. Diagnosis is based on the joint fluid puncture which is to be carried out prior to any antibiotherapy. Joint infections constitute matters of therapeutic emergency since pathological stages may evolve very rapidly, aggravating the functional process.
