Abstract

School space innovation is a project aimed at preparing for the future educational environment and creating a user-centered learning environment. This study analyzes user needs for the innovation of first grade classroom school spaces. For the study, (a) the types of first grade classroom improvements were classified and play types and characteristics were derived through a literature review; (b) a field survey was conducted and the behavior of students was observed; and (c) teachers and parents were surveyed on their satisfaction with the classroom environment and their demand for improvements. The results are as follows. First, after analyzing classroom usage behavior, it was found that it was necessary to improve the front blackboard, TV location, and personal lockers, which are mainly used during learning time. Second, through the analysis of play behavior, it was found that the characteristics of each classroom area were clarified, scattered group areas were concentrated in one place, and a complex facility plan was needed considering various play types, not just the classroom floor. Third, it was found that teachers were less satisfied than parents, and that improvements to the storage system, floor replacement, and front blackboard were needed. Fourth, as a demand for specialized spaces, teachers value play and rest areas, while parents relatively demand basic learning spaces such as reading and sitting rest areas. This study is meaningful in presenting a participatory design methodology and deriving a user-centered first grade classroom design direction.
