Abstract

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic an enourmous number of papers have appeared in the literature. Here we republish, with permission, the paper written by M.H. Adams in 1948 for the remarkable contribution in Physiology and in other fields. A short introduction by Barry W. Ninham precedes the paper.
