Abstract
The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between adolescents' use of information technologies, their basic psychological needs, and some demographic characteristics, and the frequency of their social media usage, as well as to investigate whether the basic psychological needs of adolescents predict technology use. The study was carried out with the screening model, which is one of the quantitative research methods. Personal Information Form, Information Technology Usage Scale, and Need Satisfaction Scale were used in the study. Data were collected from 508 adolescents in high schools in Ankara and Mersin provinces in the 2019-2020 academic year, using the convenience sampling method. The relationship was analyzed between the adolescents' average scores on the Needs Satisfaction Scale and the Information Technologies Usage Scale and their age, number of siblings, and overall grade point averages. The relationship was determined between the social networks used by adolescents (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Youtube, Linkedin, Snapchat, Tiktok, and WhatsApp) and their basic psychological needs and use of information technologies. It was found that the Information Technology Usage Scale was predicted by age and basic psychological needs. The results of the study were discussed in light of the relevant literature, and some suggestions were made.
