Abstract
Bariatric surgery in patients with a BMI (Body Mass Index) greater than 55 kg/m2 can be quite a challenge, consequently, we advocate for the preoperative optimization. So far, there is no evidence that preoperative weight loss corresponds to greater postoperative weight loss. The objective is to analyze the differences in weight loss in the first postoperative year after preoperative optimization using an intragastric balloon or a very low-calorie diet (VLCD Very Low-Calorie Diet). The analysis of our experience in optimizing patients shows that the very low-calorie diet is feasible, practically free from complications, achieving a similar weight loss and a lower consumption of resources compared to the preparation with intragastric balloons.
