Lessons from the disk drive industry for telecommunication fiberoptics

Abstract

Compared to the fiberoptic industry for telecommunications, the disk drive industry has a similar mixture of technologies and has had a similar but longer history of exponential improvement in performance and of challenging economic cycles. Studies of that industry provide guidance to the trends that may be expected for the fiberoptic industry after the upsurge and subsequent plunge in business experienced recently for telecommunications applications.
