MONITORING OF ENVIRONMENTAL AND ECONOMIC PROBLEMS AND THE ESTABLISHMENT OF REGIONAL GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS

Abstract

The basic principles for creating regional geographic information systems (GIS), are illustrated, using as an example a GIS designed for the monitoring of regional-and interregional-scale environmental and economic phenomena. Specific examples include GIS (and automated mapping capabilities) used to monitor and predict spring high water levels in the Volga basin, to estimate traffic volume in the center of Moscow, and monitor the ecological state of areas adjacent to the Moscow Ring Motorway.
