Abstract

Introducing the concept of philosophy, this chapter provides a starting point for the reader to understand some of the core themes of the book. In particular, it focuses on identity introducing the dichotomy of survival versus growth. The chapter also places the work in context provide a brief introduction to prisons, the prison environment, and the role of education.
