Abstract

Amran Amran The Houthis, a Zaydi Shia clan, seized large swathes of Yemen in 2014. Having mobilised in their northern stronghold of Saada, Houthi militias moved south towards Sana’a, before taking control of the capital on 21 September. They subsequently expanded their operations into at least seven di­erent provinces, sparking clashes with the security forces, armed tribesmen and al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP).
