The tradeoffs and realities of a low power high-volume design: a case study of the IBM ThinkPad 701

Abstract

This paper presents a discussion of the realities and tradeoffs involved in designing a low-power system in today's high-volume mobile computer market. The IBM ThinkPad 701 subnotebook computer is presented as an example of such a system which has experienced many design decisions based on these tradeoffs.
