Abstract

Background Chapel (http://chapel.cray.com) is an emerging parallel programming language whose design and implementation are being led by Cray Inc. in collaboration with members of computing labs, academia, and industry—both domestically and internationally. Having successfully fulfilled its research objectives under the DARPA High Productivity Computing Systems (HPCS) program that launched it, Chapel is now at the outset of a five-year effort to improve its performance, stability, and utility for real users in the field.
