Abstract
This paper discusses the three most common in-process electrical winding tests. These include the hipot, high voltage impulse and winding resistance tests. Then it discusses additional auxiliary tests which are commonly performed on windings such as inductance, rotation direction, magnet field mapping and partial discharge. Important parameters for properly conducting each of the tests in a production environment are mentioned. When alternative test and analysis methods exist, they are covered. The latest developments related to these tests are described. The paper concludes that with the combination of tests available to winding manufacturers today, the ability to test for high quality windings is the best it has ever been.
