Abstract

Background The human body is a complex structure that consists of different systems that constantly interact with each other. We will describe each system separately; however, it has to be acknowledged that when all these systems work effectively together the body maintains a healthy state. In keeping with a Rapid book this section provides an overview of each system, highlighting the main features, rather than providing the detail you would expect to find in a dedicated anatomy and physiology text. In this section, the systems of the body are ordered to start with the outer‐facing part of the body, the skin, followed by the structural framework of the body, the bones and muscles, and concluding with the body’s internal systems. Building on an overview of the human body, this section will then highlight the clinical procedures that mental health nurses need to be proficient in. These procedures as whole assist the nurse in the process of monitoring a service user’s vital signs.
