Abstract
The prevalent trend towards converter-based generation, such as wind and solar, means that future power systems will be dominated by powerelectronic converters reducing the share of conventional generation units. In this regard, equipping the converter-based generation units with grid forming control schemes seems to be a promising solution. In this paper, the fault ride through capability of wind turbines with grid forming controls is investigated. The considered control schemes are Virtual Synchronous Machine, Distributed PLL-based and Power Synchronisation Control. These control schemes are implemented in an islanded wind turbine supplying a passive load and their performance during three-phase symmetrical faults are evaluated and compared. Based on the simulation results, the strengths and weaknesses of each grid forming control scheme during faults are identified.
