A study on the improvement of the evaluation system for the musicians of public orchestras: Focusing on the 6 major metropolitan city orchestras in Korea

Abstract

This study is to recognize the problems of the evaluation system of six municipal orchestras in Korea, which is for the main purpose of improving the skills of musicians, and suggest alternatives. The issue is that the local governments or arts centers that operate the orchestras rely only on the current regular basis evaluation system without any alternatives even though the system not only fails to fulfill the purpose of improving the skills of the members and also causes conflicts. Therefore, regarding the problems of the evaluation system, which is being implemented for the purpose of improving musicians’skills, as well as specific measures for the development, FGI(Focus Group Interview) will be conducted in in-depth interviews with the union leader who represents musicians from the six municipal orchestras, artistic director(principal conductor) who directly asses musicians and are most sensitive on musicians’qualities, and the administrative personnel who operates the system. The evaluation system must be premised on improving the efficiency of orchestra operations, musicians recognizing the identities of the orchestra, and improving ones’ artistry prior to appraising each members’qualities.
