Abstract
In this chapter the essential aspects of anesthesia for intracranial mass excision are discussed. The case presented is of a patient emergently scheduled for a posterior fossa intracranial tumor resection. Subtopics include diagnosis and treatment of ICP as well as appropriate ICP monitoring devices. The chapter is divided into preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative sections with important subtopics related to the main topic in each section. Preoperative evaluation addressed includes neurological assessment for ICP and cerebral perfusion pressure, cardiac assessment, and positioning of the patient. Issues addressed regarding intraoperative management include monitors used, anesthesia plan, maintenance, and use of furosemide vs. mannitol. Postoperative issues discussed are hypertension and peripheral nerve injury.
