Abstract

Until recently, the Russian inheritance law was unchanged since its implementation in the Civil Code in 2001 and based on the principles from Czaristic and Soviet law. The current reform of the inheritance law in Russia brings big changes for the substantive law. Joint wills and contracts of inheritance, both influenced by German law, as well as inheritance funds are new legal instruments, which should meet the needs of people seeking legal advice in connection with estate planning. The authors describe the background of the reform in Russia and give an overview of the implemented legal institutions. They refer to the current difficulties in their implementation and provide proposals for solutions in some unresolved matters.
