Abstract
We usually refuse to acknowledge that we are an informational entity; that is, that we are simply a quantifiable set of data. We believe that the whole is more than the sum of its parts. All of us consider that we have an identity, a singular way of being and that this makes us unique and different from others. Nonetheless, we eventually end up leading pretty similar lives. Public life makes us the same, private life differentiates us. We, as modern individuals, value our private identity. This was not always the case, since in ancient times, it was the public subject and not the private one that stood out. However, what is a fact is that humanity has always been defined by plurality. This paper aims, firstly, to point out the importance that for humanity has the development of identity. Secondly, it tries to show to what extent this development requires times and spaces of solitude. Third, we will describe the possibilities that a young person has today in this regard in a world governed by information and communication technology (ICT). Finally, we will conclude by affirming that, if we want to raise unique and responsible individuals with moral capacity, it will be necessary to promote among young people the possibility of enjoying times and spaces of solitude; that is, times and spaces in which they can be with themselves and disconnect.
