Low‐Temperature Applications

Abstract

All members of the welding fraternity are familiar with the creation and applications of high temperatures. It is proposed in this paper to make a brief excursion to the other end of the temperature scale and to have a look at some of the uses being made of intense cold, with particular references to liquified nitrogen. Progressively wider fields of application of super-cold temperatures are being covered in modern scientific and industrial processes. The study of the effects and utilisation of really low temperatures is a specialised science which is sometimes termed cryogenic technology.
