A utility-based performance optimization model for the cooperative heterogeneous wireless communication systems is proposed to analyze the cooperative diversity gain, in which the optimal theoretical performance model for the cooperative relay node selection strategy is deduced. Based on the proposed theoretical models and considering the computation complexity, the sub-optimal cooperative relay node selection algorithm is determined to pursue the maximum spectrum efficiency from the global viewpoint of heterogeneous wireless communication systems under the conditions of guaranteeing the equivalent transmission rates between the first and second hops.
