The importance of a subject, according to the Law Guidelines and Bases of National Education (BRASIL, 1996), is related to multiple dimensions and can be simplified in preparing students for the exercise of citizenship and for the labor market, which involves, to some extent, inclusion in higher education. This paper is the result of a survey of the status attributed to the Sociology discipline in the High School curriculum by students, considering its importance regarding: i) high school curriculum; ii) labor market; iii) daily life and; iv) National High School Exam (Enem). A sample survey was conducted limited to a population of 640 students who attend the 3rd year of high school in 8 schools located in the city of MaceióAL. Abstract

In recent years, school sociology has been attacked in many ways, including having its presence in high school threatened on the grounds that it is not important. The importance of a subject, according to the Law Guidelines and Bases of National Education (BRASIL, 1996), is related to multiple dimensions and can be simplified in preparing students for the exercise of citizenship and for the labor market, which involves, to some extent, inclusion in higher education.
