224 Abstract : Considered one of the most outstanding Brazilian intellectuals from the turn of the 19th to the 20th century, Olavo Bilac maintained a close relationship with Portugal, a country he visited on at least in three occasions. An admirer of Eça de Queiroz, with whom he shared the pages of the Rio de Janeiro news-paper Gazeta de Notícias, Bilac had close contact with many Portuguese intellectuals, of whom he was a lo-quacious interlocutor. We find records of this chroni cler’s relationship with Portugal and with the Portu-guesesq in newspapers and magazines published on both sides of the Atlantic, whose texts show us that Olavo Bilac was considered an authentic spokesman for Luso-Brazilian journalism.
