For a reliable assessment of the distribution of impurity concentrations and obtaining scientifically substantiated conclusions, it was found necessary to have observational material for at least 5-10 years. Abstract

The paper considers a range of issues related to the main tasks of environmental pollution monitoring. It is shown that the magnitude of errors in the calculations of the averaged data from the analysis of single observations is 60-99%. As the averaging periods increase, the error values decrease.
