The Need for Formal Engineering Process Models

Abstract

This paper addresses system engineering for large electronic systems. It provides several views of the systems engineering process as documented and as practiced. The role of automated tools in the process is discussed. The paper highlights major deficiencies in today's practice and states some necessary developments for their correction. It cites what we consider to be the principle efforts, currently underway, that could reduce the deficiencies in the process.
