Abstract
The HiniDisc (MD) system 'includes a recordable magneto-optical. (MO) disc for user-recording and a conventional read-only disc for music-software WiniDisc is highly suited for outdoor poxtable applications. By mean8 of audio data Compra88iOn and 8hOCk m8i8tant X Y , Mter the introduction of the compact ~isc, consumers have becoxm accustomed to the bemerit of quick random access w i t h an optical disc system. ZesUlt, the CD has been universally accepted as the standard for high fidelity music playback i n the home. Oa88ette is still widely used in portable outdoor applioations because of its easy handling ,c011p1ctne88 and rooording capability. But sales of cassette tape have been deareasing since 1989 leading Sony t o believe that the compact cassette tape is approaching end of the life. Magneto-optical (MO) disc recording technology has been used for computer data storage system for several years. Based on this technology, we have developed a direct ower-writing system that is capable of the same high recording density as compaat &so. W e have ale0 sucoessfully.de~loped a digital audio canpression system nanrsd AT= (Adaptive ~~ansform Acoustic Coding) that nvkes 74 minutes of digital audio reoording possible on a small 64mn diac. In addition, a shock-reaiatant buffer memory has been incorporated to minimize the effects of shock in portable applications. A8 a On the other hand, the^ compact
