Experiences with fiber optics in a mill environment

Abstract

With the wide use of programmable controllers in the paper industry now becoming common practice, applications that involve remote inputs and outputs at distances in thousands of feet may require the use of fiber-optic communications for reasons of reliability, installation time, or installation cost. The first application of this communication medium in a mill environment is presented. The overview covers topics such as site description, communication-medium limitations, and testing alternatives.<>
