Abstract

Taste or gustation has been long regarded as a major sense though it provides information about only a limited number of stimulus quantities that is sweet, salty, bitter and umami. However, its apparent simplicity and stability may be seen as speaking to its critical role as the gatekeeper of the body, protecting humans and other animals from consuming dangerous substances and encouraging consumption of nutritious ones. Thus when disruption occurs they have a substantial impact on nutriture and quality of life; therefore it should be treated at earliest as dental practitioners are often the first clinicians to be presented with complaints about changes in taste.
