When "Things Go Wrong": The Gardens of Italy

Abstract

In this essay, the author reports on a tour of Italian gardens, guided both by Sir George Sitwell's 1909 book On the Making of Gardens, and the laconic tour guide, Tom, whose comments on "the Jewish problem" and esoteric view of European Jewish history lend an off-kilter air to the experience and give rise to a flower of reflection.
