Abstract
The advent of Internet of Things (IoT) has brought a revolution in the application of information technology, embedded systems and communication technologies. IoT enforced automation has a tremendous utility in the field of canal irrigation and farming practices utilizing this type of water source. In this paper, we propose an Internet of Things based model for the development of an intelligent micro irrigation grid for efficient use and conservation of water with a farmer alert system. The grid establishes a uniform water supply to farms that are irrigated through gravity canals by regulating the inflow of water from the canal distributaries. Using intelligent IoT enabled inlet gates, capable of communicating with surrounding regulators (Culverts), only requisite amount of water is supplied to farms based on sensor based parameters. This is a microcontroller based system with wireless sensor networks to ensure communication between farm level components and canal level components. A web based GUI platform is also implemented which allows the end user (farmer) to monitor the irrigation of the farm real-time and control the actions to be performed on the farm.
