Patronage in the Russian Empire as the first experience of domestic probation

Abstract

Статья посвящена опыту патроната в Российской империи как деятельности, направленной на оказание всесторонней помощи лицам, освободившимся из мест заключения. Анализируется процесс развития данного института, прошедшего путь от разновидности общей филантропии до одного из концептуальных направлений уголовно-исполнительной политики. Предполагается, что на заключительном этапе своего развития, после введения типового устава обществ патроната и закона об условно-досрочном освобождении, патронат выходит за свои терминологические границы, приобретая черты, сближающие его с постпенитенциарной пробацией The article is devoted to the experience of patronage in the Russian Empire as the activity aimed at providing comprehensive assistance to persons released from prison. The process of development of this institution, which has gone from a kind of general philanthropy to one of the conceptual directions of penal policy, is analyzed. It is assumed that at the final stage of its development, after the introduction of the standard charter of patronage societies and the law on parole, the patronage goes beyond its terminological boundaries, acquiring features that bring it closer to post-penitentiary probation
