Abstract

The world has been struggling with global warming for many years. One way to reduce this phenomenon is to limit anthropogenic carbon dioxide emission to the atmosphere, which is partly responsible for contemporary climate change. This problem is international, but each country is obliged to follow general recommendations. In Poland, the idea of underground carbon sequestration (CCS) is increasingly being considered in the last decade. Northern Poland seems to be one of the perspective areas. For this reason, the following article describes the possibility of underground CO2 injection in this area. It contains the detailed description of the geological structure of Northern Poland. Types of underground structures for sequestration were also selected. The article also describes the technical conditions for the CO2 injection process. The most numerous group of boreholes suitable for CCS are those with documented oil or gas deposits. They are usually Upper Permian, and less often Middle Cambrian or Silurian hydrocarbon geological traps, where CO2 can be used in the enhanced oil and gas recovery. There are also several boreholes with saline aquifers.
