Abstract
Stress has come to be the watchword of the present century and its implications have taken a toll on individuals at varying stages of the life cycle. Adolescents are no exception. Assessments and examinations of any kind put a person under pressure and emotional strain, and more so the academic examinations, as the performance at these have become the indices of one's economic and social capabilities in adult life. In addition to several other factors that contribute to stress among students, socio-economic status (SES) is found to bear a strong relation to their experience of stress. The present research attempted to study stress in students of standard X in relation to their SES. The sample comprised of 1092 students of standard X. The rating scales used for the purpose of study were prepared by the researcher. Descriptive analysis dealt with the magnitude of the variables included in the study to show the extent of total stress, achievement stress, examination stress and social stress of total number of students (TNS), boys and girls. Inferential statistics included Pearson's coefficient of correlation. The study revealed a negative correlation between stress and SES and implies the higher need of attention to be accorded to students belonging to the lower socioeconomic strata of society in a bid to alleviate the stress they encounter, help them recognise their potential and motivate them to use the available resources optimally.
