The road structure

Abstract

Probably more research has been carried out and more technical papers written throughout the world over the past quarter of a century on various aspects of the road structure than on any other branch of engineering, and yet. in New Zealand, and also. it would seem, in other countries, serious and widespread road failures continue to occur. Many New Zealand roads, both old and new. some of which would have given satisfactory service prior to 1940. are to-day potholing and breaking up to the extent that complete reconstruction from the subgrade is being or has been undertaken.
